Bangladesh food ministry reiterates no evidence of substandard wheat

The Bangladesh Food Ministry Sunday again issued a statement reiterating that they didn’t find any evidence of rotten or substandard wheat in the consignment imported from Brazil.
On June 24, the ministry has issued a similar statement in the wake of some media claims that the government has imported ‘substandard’ Brazilian wheat.
“Even after clarifying that no evidence of substandard wheat has been found, some media are still publishing negative news on the issue,” said the statement signed by deputy secretary Md Kawsar Ahmed.
Like earlier statement, the ministry Sunday also mentioned that after seeing media report, the ministry has conducted a laboratory test of the Brazilian wheat and found no evidence of rotten and substandard elements in it.
Under the supervision of the director general of food department, the samples of the wheat were collected from across the country with help of district commissioners and tested those at the laboratory of the department.
The statement said the government has been importing wheat from abroad since long by floating international tender for fulfilling wheat demand of the country.
It said the food department imports wheat under an agreement with lowest bidder and as per the agreement the authority only accepts the imported wheat consignment after a laboratory test, run under nine specifications.
No negative information regarding Brazilian wheat was found under those nine specifications when the wheat sent to the science laboratory for testing.
The ministry threw an open challenge to all to prove the claim of substandard wheat. “Any individual or organization can collect sample of the wheat from government godown and test it to any laboratory of the country. We will support them,” the statement said.
The ministry urged all concerned to refrain from ill motive to make the nation confused by publishing wrong and assumption based information. (Source: BSS)

Bangladesh Bank revises provisioning requirement for mutual funds

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has revised the provisioning requirements for banks against their investment in mutual funds (MFs).
The central bank in a circular on Sunday said that banks from now on would not have to keep provision for losses against investment in mutual funds if the unit’s cost price is equivalent to or lower than 95 percent of its net asset value (NAV) in current market prices.
BB, however, said if the cost price of the unit is higher than 95 percent of the market value or NAV on the basis of current market price, banks should have to keep the provision by deducting the market value of the unit from the cost price.
The central bank asked all scheduled banks to implement the directive immediately.
Currently, 40 closed-end mutual funds worth Tk 4,440 crore are listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange. (Source: BSS)

All Walton Plazas across the country are providing this latest installment facility as per the compnay’s installment policy, he said adding, the plan is applicable for all Walton products, except for mobile handsets, that cost at least Tk 8,500. This offer will be continued until further notice.
“In addition, if the consumers buy the Walton brand’s products by paying nominal down payment at maximum 6 months installment, they will have to pay the product’s MRP value only,” he said.
During the press conference, they claimed that Walton has captured a lion portion of the country’s refrigerator market. Specially, the consumers are showing keen interest in the large deep based refrigerators of Walton brand.
The demand for Walton brand refrigerators is increasing day by day across the country due to mainly several reasons, including cheap price, world class quality, service network across the country and production of local weather based refrigerators.
Following the sweltering summer heat and upcoming Eid, the refrigerator’s sales have been increased across the country, they said adding, thus, they have cut the prices of Walton brand’s refrigerators.
In addition, they have extended the number of installments by more 6 months up to 3 years considering the ever-growing demands and buying power capacity of the people. (Source: Press Release)

‘Fearless’ Bangladesh celebrate rare consistent run

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza believes playing a fearless brand of one-day cricket has brought about a “significant change” in his team’s fortunes.
Over the last two years Bangladesh lost home ODI series to Sri Lanka and India and were also blanked 3-0 in West Indies, but an upswing in performances has seen them win 10 ODIs at home in a row.
Bangladesh blanked Zimbabwe 5-0 in a five-ODI series before reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand for the first time, and proved that was no fluke by thumping Pakistan 3-0 in a ODI series at home.
They followed that up with their first ODI series win over two-time world champions India on Sunday with a game to spare.
“I think the boys are playing fearless cricket,” Mortaza told reporters. “This is the significant change.
“The boys are not scared to play shots. They are not scared to put the slips on so I think that sort of cricket has changed.
“Cricket is all about mind games. I think we are all playing good cricket at the moment, especially with our head in the right place. I have always wanted to play attacking cricket.”
The Bangladesh batsmen went hard at India’s bowling in both matches while left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman ran through the vaunted Indian batting, picking up five wickets on debut and then six on Sunday.
Both victories were comfortably achieved and the margin of the wins surprised even Mortaza.
“This is one of the biggest achievements. Actually I think the boys are really confident. Maybe we didn’t expect (to win) that way,” the medium paceman said.
“But we always thought that we are going to play to win and fight till the last ball. Obviously I know that if we play our best cricket, it will be competitive. But we can win as well.”
While Bangladesh have surprised top teams in the past, they have suffered from a lack of consistency and Mortaza said he hoped his team can continue delivering results.
“Our biggest problem was the consistency,” he said. “In cricket, momentum is very important so hopefully the boys will keep it up.” (Source: Reuters)

Bangladesh, China to be connected by high-speed train

As part of its “Southern Silk Route” China plans to establish a high speed railway link between Kunming and Kolkata through Dhaka and Chittagong, according to reports reaching Dhaka from Kunming, the capital city of China’s southern Yunnan province.
The proposal, which found a mention at recently held Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) meeting in Kunming, plans to boost the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) multi-modal transport system.
“The high speed corridor would give a fillip to the economies of all the countries of the region,” said Li Ji Ming, vice- secretary of Yunnan provincial government. The project looks forward to the newly established Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and other funders for financing it.
Ming was talking to journalists following a successful expo fair in Kunming, which was attended by a large number of South Asian firms.
The 2800 kilometer rail route could be a critical component for the BCIM that seeks cross border movement of goods and people in the four countries.
China has pledged US $40 billion for the Silk Route and $50 billion for the AIIB. The BCIM area has a trade potential of $132 billion.
Yunnan enjoys geographical proximity with GMS and BCIM regions and is only 1000 kilometers away from Chittagong compared to 1700 kilometers to the nearest Chinese port.
It is the epicenter of the China-South, South-East Asia economic corridors. (Source: BSS)

All Rana Plaza victims to be compensated within weeks, says ILO

A fund set up to compensate the victims of the Rana Plaza factory collapse has finally reached its 30-million target, the UN’s international labor organization (ILO) said this week.
With all the funding now secured, the last families still awaiting a payout will receive their money “In The Coming Weeks”, said the ILO, which chairs the Rana Plaza coordination committee.
The committee, which was established in 2013 and represents all industry stakeholders, had estimated it would need 30 million (26.5 million euros) to fully and fairly compensate the families of the over 1,100 garment workers who died and some 1,500 others who were injured in the country’s worst ever industrial accident.
By April 24, on the second anniversary of the disaster, the committee had raised 27 million and was able to pay compensation to 70 percent of the more than 2,800 claimants, the ILO said in a statement.
“Further donations, including one significant sum pledged late last week meant that 30m had now been reached and all payments can be made,” it added.
The development was welcomed by ILO director-general Guy Ryder. “This is a milestone but we still have important business to deal with,” he was quoted as saying in the statement.
“We must now work together to ensure that accidents can be prevented in future, and that a robust national employment injury insurance scheme is established so that victims of any future accidents will be swiftly and justly compensated and cared for.”
A host of western retailers had clothing made at Rana plaza, including Italy’s benetton, Spain’s mango and the British low-cost chain Primark. all three were among a number of international brands that contributed to the compensation fund. (Source: BSS)
